I love season one Betty Draper so much
like I genuinely feel for her. She feels her life slipping out of her grasp little by little, and she feels the winds of change. she tries so hard to remain that June Cleaver type house wife and maintain that ‘american dream’ lifestyle and she knows she can’t and she ends up not being able to.
And I love her because she tries so hard and puts on a brave face around others. Season one Betty Draper carries a lot of weight on her shoulders; more than the show and viewers give her credit for, I think. She has to deal with her childish husband who is secretive and aloof, she has to raise her kids, keep the house together, and maintain an image. I mean she carries the entire responsibility of making her family appear respectable and socially acceptable.
Her therapist calls her anxieties childish and “full of petty jealousy,” but in the era of keeping up with the joneses and initial reactions always being “But what will people think?!” she has a lot to bear.
I know she had to change as seasons progress, but I wish they would have made her stronger and more independent. I feel like, with the whole bird shooting scene and the smacking of her neighbor scene, Betty possesses so much more than she ended up with by season 4.
I wish she could have stayed this way instead.
